Independent Examinations Board

The IEB assesses learners at independent schools that register with it as client schools — most of South Africa's well-known private schools, along with a growing number of online and distance institutions. Government schools, by contrast, write the NSC set by the Department of Basic Education (DBE).

Families usually do not choose the IEB directly; they choose a school, and the school's registration determines the examination board. That said, the IEB pathway tends to suit learners who thrive on open-ended, application-style questions and independent work, since IEB papers are known for testing insight and reasoning rather than only recall. IEB schools typically carry this assessment style down into grades 8–11, so learners are trained for it well before matric.

The IEB also runs May examination sittings and provisions for part-time candidates, which matters for post-school learners upgrading their matric results or writing outstanding subjects.

Like the state NSC, the IEB NSC requires seven subjects in grades 10–12: a home language, a first additional language, Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy, Life Orientation, and three elective subjects. Promotion and pass requirements follow the same national policy — the differences sit in how each subject is examined.

For every subject, the IEB's Subject Assessment Guidelines set out the school-based assessment (SBA) portfolio, practical or oral components, and the structure of the final examination papers. The final mark blends SBA (generally 25% in most subjects) with the external examinations, and Umalusi moderates and statistically checks the whole process before certificates are issued.

What learners and parents notice in practice:

'IEB vs CAPS' is really a comparison of examiners, not curricula — the content is the same CAPS curriculum and the certificate is the same NSC, and neither certificate outranks the other legally: a Level 6 in Mathematics is a Level 6, whichever board issued it. Cambridge and the IB, by contrast, are genuinely different curricula with their own content, structures and assessment.

The IB Diploma is excellent preparation for study abroad but a bigger departure from the South African system than the IEB, which keeps learners inside the national qualification while raising the assessment bar — the IEB NSC has been benchmarked as broadly comparable to Cambridge AS Level standard.

IEB results are released in early January, a few days before the state results. The headline numbers reflect a small, well-resourced cohort, so they are not directly comparable to the national DBE pass rate — but they do show that IEB learners overwhelmingly qualify for university.

Internationally, the IEB NSC is well travelled: it has been benchmarked by Ecctis (formerly UK NARIC) against Cambridge AS Level, and IEB graduates are regularly admitted to universities in the UK, US, Australia and Europe, usually alongside institution-specific requirements such as subject minimums or language tests.

Because IEB examinations reward insight over rote learning, the gap between 'knows the work' and 'scores well' can be wide. A strong tutor closes that gap by drilling unseen problem-solving: working through IEB past papers under time pressure, unpacking marking guidelines, and teaching learners how examiners award marks for method and reasoning. In subjects like Mathematics, Physical Sciences and Accounting, this exam-technique layer is often worth as much as content revision.
