Maths and the sciences are the gateway subjects of South African schooling: they decide which university programmes a learner can apply for, from engineering and medicine to computer science, actuarial science and the health sciences. They are also the subjects where learners most often need help. When the Class of 2025 NSC results were announced in January 2026, the overall pass rate reached a record 88% — yet the Mathematics pass rate fell from 69% to 64%, and only about a third of candidates wrote Mathematics at all. International benchmarking tells the same story: in the most recent TIMSS study, South African Grade 9 learners ranked near the bottom of participating countries in maths and last in science.

The struggle rarely starts in matric. Gaps in fractions, algebra and basic proportional reasoning from grades 8 and 9 compound quietly until Grade 11 trigonometry, Physical Sciences stoichiometry or Life Sciences genetics suddenly feel impossible. Large classes and tight pacing schedules mean teachers often cannot stop to close individual gaps, and by the time a learner is scoring in the 40s, the problem is usually two or three grades deep. How to do well in these subjects

  1. Do past papers under timed conditions, then mark yourself against the official memo — in maths and Physical Sciences most lost marks come from skipped working and missing units, not missing knowledge.
  2. In Mathematics, master the Paper 1 vs Paper 2 split early: algebra, functions and calculus behave very differently from geometry, trig and statistics, and learners are usually much weaker on one paper than the other.
  3. Always write down the formula before substituting values in Physical Sciences — CAPS and IEB memos award the formula mark even if the arithmetic that follows goes wrong.
  4. Learn Life Sciences definitions word-for-word from the exam guideline; markers look for specific terminology, and a nearly-right definition often scores zero.
  5. Show every step in multi-mark calculations and carry units through the working — method marks (and positive marking for follow-on errors) can rescue a question with a slip at the end.
  6. Practise interpreting graphs in all three sciences subjects: motion graphs in physics, population and enzyme graphs in Life Sciences, and function sketches in maths appear in almost every paper.
  7. For matric Mathematics, drill Euclidean geometry riders separately — it is the section learners avoid most, yet the theorems are a closed list you can systematically master.
  8. In the November exam run, Mathematics Paper 1 and Paper 2 fall within days of each other, so split revision across both papers from the start of the year instead of cramming one at a time.

Frequently asked questions

Should my child take Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy in Grade 10?

If there is any chance your child will apply for engineering, medicine, science, IT, actuarial science or most commerce degrees, they need core Mathematics — Mathematical Literacy is not accepted for those programmes. Maths Lit is the right call only when the intended career path genuinely does not require maths. If the worry is a weak Grade 9 mark rather than the career plan, targeted tutoring in grades 9-10 to fix the algebra foundation is usually a better move than switching.

What was the matric maths pass rate in South Africa?

In the 2025 NSC results, announced in January 2026, the Mathematics pass rate was 64%, down from 69% the year before — and only around a third of matric candidates wrote Mathematics at all. The numbers reflect how demanding the subject is nationally, and why so many families bring in one-on-one support well before matric.

What marks do universities require in maths and science?

Requirements vary by university and programme, but as a guide, engineering and medicine typically ask for 70%+ (level 6-7) in both Mathematics and Physical Sciences, while BSc and many commerce degrees commonly ask for 60%+ in Mathematics. Always check the specific faculty's admission point score and subject requirements, since popular programmes select well above their published minimums.

Why is my child suddenly failing maths in Grade 10 or 11 after doing fine before?

This is the most common pattern we see. Grades 8-9 maths can be passed on procedure and memory, but from Grade 10 the syllabus assumes fluent algebra, and Grade 11 adds functions, trigonometry and geometry that build directly on it. A tutor's first job is diagnosing which earlier gaps are causing the collapse, closing them, and then catching up the current syllabus — marks usually recover once the foundation is repaired.

Is Physical Sciences harder than Life Sciences?

They are hard in different ways. Physical Sciences is calculation-heavy and depends strongly on your Mathematics ability, while Life Sciences involves a large volume of content and rewards precise terminology and well-structured written answers. Learners aiming at medicine or health sciences often take both, which is exactly where a structured tutoring plan across the two subjects helps most.

Does online maths and science tutoring actually work?

Yes — for these subjects it works particularly well. When should we start tutoring — and is matric too late?

Earlier is better: gaps fixed in grades 8-10 pay off through every later year, and Grade 11 is the ideal time to consolidate before matric, since Grade 11 work is examined again in the NSC. Matric is not too late, though — a focused programme of past papers, exam technique and targeted gap-filling from the start of the year can still move a mark by a full symbol or more.
