Physical Sciences is South Africa's combined physics-and-chemistry subject, taken from Grade 10 through matric. It is examined in two separate papers — Paper 1 covers physics (mechanics, waves, electricity and magnetism, and matter and materials) and Paper 2 covers chemistry (chemical change, organic chemistry, rates and equilibrium, acids and bases, and electrochemistry). Each NSC paper is three hours long and counts 150 marks, and a formula sheet and periodic table are provided — the challenge is knowing which relationship to use, not memorising it.

How to do well in Physical Sciences

  1. Learn the data sheet before the exam, not during it. Formulae are provided, but you must recognise which equation fits the situation and what every symbol means — practise with the actual DBE or IEB formula sheet next to you from day one.
  2. In mechanics, choose a positive direction, write it down, and never switch mid-question. Most lost marks in momentum and projectile-motion questions come from sign errors, not physics errors.
  3. Show formula, substitution and answer with the unit for every calculation. Markers award part marks for each step, so even an arithmetic slip can still earn most of the marks if your working is visible.
  4. Convert units before you substitute: grams to kilograms, cm³ to dm³, kilometres per hour to metres per second. A correct method with unconverted units scores almost nothing.
  5. Drill IUPAC naming and functional groups until they are automatic — organic chemistry is the biggest single block of marks in Paper 2, and structural formulae must show every bond the memo expects.
  6. Answer Le Chatelier and rates questions in memo language: name the stress, state which reaction (forward or reverse) is favoured, and link it to the change in yield or rate. Vague answers like 'the equilibrium shifts' earn nothing.
  7. Set stoichiometry out stepwise — n = m/M or n = cV, mole ratio from the balanced equation, then the required quantity — and always check for a limiting reagent before calculating yield.
  8. Memorise the examinable definitions word for word (Newton's laws, the Doppler effect, the photoelectric effect, oxidation and reduction). Two-mark definition questions appear in every paper and are the cheapest marks available.
