Mathematics is the single most consequential subject choice a South African learner makes. It is the gateway to engineering, medicine, actuarial science, computer science, commerce and most BSc programmes — and it is also the subject where gaps compound fastest. A learner who never quite mastered factorisation in Grade 9 will feel it in Grade 11 trigonometry and again in Grade 12 calculus. The national picture explains why so many families look for help. In the 2025 NSC exams, only about a third of matric candidates wrote pure Mathematics (the rest chose Mathematical Literacy), and the pass rate among those who did slipped to 64% — against a record overall matric pass rate of 88%. Passing is also not the real target: a 30% subject pass keeps the certificate intact, but universities typically want 60-70% or more in Mathematics for STEM and commerce programmes. Mathematics across the curricula
IEB
IEB Mathematics follows the same CAPS content as the DBE but is examined by the Independent Examinations Board, with a reputation for less predictable, more interpretive questions — especially in Paper 2 geometry riders and unseen problem-solving. Working through actual IEB past papers, not only DBE ones, matters for exam technique.
DBE (CAPS)
Under CAPS, matric Mathematics is written as two 3-hour, 150-mark NSC papers: Paper 1 covers algebra, sequences, functions, finance, calculus and probability, while Paper 2 covers statistics, analytical geometry, trigonometry and Euclidean geometry. Functions and calculus together carry roughly 70 of Paper 1's 150 marks, so they dominate matric preparation.
Cambridge
Cambridge learners write IGCSE Mathematics (0580) at Core or Extended tier — the updated syllabus includes a dedicated non-calculator paper — before progressing to AS & A Level Mathematics (9709) with pure maths, mechanics and statistics components. The A Level goes further than CAPS matric, particularly in calculus and mechanics.
IB
The IB Diploma splits maths into two courses, each at SL or HL: Analysis and Approaches (AA) for algebra- and calculus-heavy routes like engineering, and Applications and Interpretation (AI) for data, modelling and technology-driven work. Choosing between AA and AI — and between SL and HL — should be driven by intended university course requirements.
How to do well in Mathematics
- Learn the Paper 1 / Paper 2 split cold: Paper 1 is algebra, sequences, functions, finance, calculus and probability; Paper 2 is statistics, analytical geometry, trigonometry and Euclidean geometry. Revise for each paper separately.
- Prioritise functions and calculus for Paper 1 — together they carry close to half the paper under CAPS. Being fluent in cubic graph sketching and optimisation is the cheapest way to lift a Paper 1 mark.
- Memorise the Grade 11 circle geometry theorems with their exact wording and acceptable reasons. Geometry riders award marks for correctly stated reasons, and vague reasons lose marks even when the logic is right.
- Practise trig general solutions and compound-angle identities until they are automatic — trigonometry is typically the largest single chunk of Paper 2.
- Show every step in algebra and calculus. NSC memos award method marks, so a wrong final answer with correct working still scores; an unexplained answer often does not.
- In financial maths, draw a timeline for every annuity or loan question before touching the formula — most lost marks come from using the wrong value of n or mixing payment and interest dates.
- Do at least the last five years of past papers under timed, closed-book conditions, then mark yourself strictly against the official memo. Both the DBE and IEB publish papers with marking guidelines.
- Never leave a question blank. Substitute, sketch, or write the relevant formula — partial marks are real, and examiners can only award what is on the page.

Frequently asked questions
Should my child take Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy?
If there is any chance your child wants to study engineering, medicine, computer science, actuarial science or most BSc and BCom programmes, they need pure Mathematics — Maths Literacy is not accepted for those degrees. Maths Literacy is a sensible choice only when a learner is certain their path does not require Maths and the subject is actively pulling down their aggregate. In 2025 only about 34% of matrics wrote pure Maths, and universities increasingly treat it as a scarce, valuable signal.
Can you switch from Mathematics to Maths Literacy (or back) in Grade 11 or 12?
Switching from Maths to Maths Literacy is usually possible up to a school-set deadline, commonly by the end of Grade 11 or early Grade 12, subject to the school's and province's rules. Switching the other way, from Maths Literacy back to Maths, is very hard after Grade 10 because two years of content must be caught up. Before dropping Maths, it is worth trying targeted tutoring for a term — the problem is often one or two foundational gaps, not ability.
What is the difference between Maths Paper 1 and Paper 2 in matric?
Both are 3-hour, 150-mark papers. Paper 1 covers algebra and equations, number patterns and sequences, functions and graphs, financial maths, differential calculus and probability. Paper 2 covers statistics, analytical geometry, trigonometry and Euclidean geometry. Learners are often stronger on one paper than the other, which is why a tutor will usually diagnose per paper before building a revision plan.
What percentage do you need in Maths to get into university in South Africa?
A subject pass is 30%, but that only keeps your NSC intact — it does not open programme doors. Most universities ask for roughly 50-60% in Maths for BCom-type degrees and 60-70% or higher for engineering, health sciences and actuarial programmes, with competitive courses effectively requiring more. Always check the specific institution's admission point score and subject requirements, since they differ.
Why is the matric Maths pass rate so low?
In the 2025 NSC exams the Mathematics pass rate was 64%, well below the 88% overall pass rate, and it fell from 69% the year before. The main driver is cumulative gaps: matric Maths assumes fluent Grade 8-11 algebra, geometry and trigonometry, so weaknesses from earlier grades surface in Paper 1 calculus and Paper 2 geometry. When is the best time to start Maths tutoring — Grade 10, 11 or matric?
Earlier is meaningfully cheaper in both money and stress. Grade 10 is when the FET curriculum forks into functions, Euclidean geometry and trigonometry, and Grade 11 content makes up a large share of what matric exams assume. Starting in Grade 10 or 11 lets a tutor fix foundations at a calm pace; starting in matric still helps, but the work becomes triage focused on the highest-mark topics.
