Life Sciences is the study of living systems, from the DNA inside a single cell to the way whole populations respond to their environment. In the South African FET phase it runs from Grade 10 through matric, and many learners are surprised by how much the subject rewards precise language and neat, well-labelled diagrams rather than raw memorisation. A learner who can explain a process clearly, in the right order and with the right terms, consistently out-scores one who simply recognises the facts.

By Grade 12 the National Senior Certificate splits the work across two papers of 150 marks each. Paper 1 leans on human physiology and continuity of life: meiosis, reproduction, the nervous and endocrine systems, homeostasis and plant responses. Paper 2 covers DNA and protein synthesis, genetics and inheritance, and evolution. Both papers mix objective questions, short answers, data-response items and a longer mini-essay, so learners need range as well as depth.

How to do well in Life Sciences

  1. Learn to draw and label the standard diagrams cold — the nephron, neuron, reflex arc, eye, ear, the phases of meiosis and DNA replication. Marks are awarded for correct labels with lines that actually touch the structure.
  2. Terminology is worth marks and spelling counts in the memo. Keep separate lists of easily confused pairs (meiosis I vs meiosis II, dominant vs recessive, artery vs vein) and quiz yourself until the correct word is automatic.
  3. For the 20-mark mini-essay, plan first: jot the logical sequence, use short sub-headings, and cover enough content points to secure the 17 content marks while keeping the flow tight for the 3 synthesis marks.
  4. Always set out genetics questions as a full cross — parental genotypes, gametes, the F1 or F2 offspring, and the phenotypic and genotypic ratios. Define the key term (for example codominance) before you work the problem.
  5. For process topics like photosynthesis, respiration and protein synthesis, memorise the ordered stages and, crucially, where in the cell or organelle each stage happens. Examiners often ask for the location, not just the reaction.
  6. In data-response and graph questions, read the axes and units first, quote actual figures with units when describing a trend, then explain the cause. Describe before you explain — they are separate marks.
  7. When a question says tabulate or compare, use a table with two columns and put comparable points on the same row (mitosis vs meiosis, insulin vs glucagon). A paragraph loses the comparison marks.
  8. For evolution, do not just recite Darwin — be ready to apply natural selection step by step to a novel example (variation, selection pressure, survival, reproduction, change in allele frequency over generations).

What is the difference between Life Sciences Paper 1 and Paper 2?

In Grade 12, Paper 1 focuses on continuity and the human body — meiosis, reproduction, the nervous and endocrine systems, homeostasis and plant responses. Paper 2 covers DNA and protein synthesis, genetics and inheritance, and evolution. Each paper is 150 marks and written in two and a half hours.

Is Life Sciences a hard subject to pass in matric?

Life Sciences is very manageable if you keep up with the terminology and practise past papers. How do I answer the Life Sciences essay question?

Practising a few essays under time pressure is the fastest way to improve.

Is Life Sciences the same as Natural Sciences or Biology?

Life Sciences is the FET-phase subject (Grades 10-12) that grows out of Natural Sciences studied in earlier grades, and it is essentially South Africa's version of Biology. Cambridge and IB learners study the same broad content under the name Biology, though the exam structure and some terminology differ.
