Afrikaans tutoring
One-on-one Afrikaans tutoring for grades 8-12 — taalstrukture, begrip, letterkunde and skryfwerk, for FAL and Home Language learners.
IEB · Cambridge · IB · DBE — grades 8–12 & university
Afrikaans is the subject where thousands of otherwise strong learners quietly lose marks. Most South African learners take it as First Additional Language (FAL), and if English is the language spoken at home, Afrikaans often gets the least practice of any subject: there is nowhere to "absorb" it the way you absorb English from series, music and social media. The result is a familiar pattern — a learner who understands the gist of a comprehension passage but cannot phrase an answer in their own Afrikaans words, and who freezes when a question asks for the lydende vorm or indirekte rede.
The good news is that Afrikaans is one of the most coachable subjects in the curriculum. The taalstrukture section of Paper 1 tests a fairly fixed set of rules (word order, ontkenning, tenses, direct and indirect speech, active and passive voice, degrees of comparison) that repeat year after year in past papers. Letterkunde comes down to genuinely knowing the setwork — characters, themes and key quotations — and skryfwerk is about mastering a handful of formats: the opstel and the transactional texts like the vriendskaplike brief, e-pos and dagboekinskrywing. A tutor who diagnoses exactly which of these pillars is weak can lift a mark faster in Afrikaans than in almost any other subject.
SyntroLearn matches learners with vetted South African tutors who teach Afrikaans FAL and Home Language across grades 8-12, one-on-one and online. Lessons are built around your child's school's setworks and the specific paper they are preparing for, whether that is a Grade 9 taal toets or the matric finals. Tell us what your learner is struggling with on our get-matched page and we will pair them with a tutor who fits their grade, curriculum and goals.

Afrikaans across the curricula
IEB
IEB schools write their own NSC Afrikaans papers (FAL and HL) with the familiar taal, letterkunde and skryf split, but questions lean harder on inference, own-words answers and unseen texts, and setwork lists differ from the state list. IEB past papers and marking guidelines are the best preparation.
DBE (CAPS)
Under CAPS, matric Afrikaans FAL is examined in three papers: Vraestel 1 taal in konteks (80 marks: begrip, opsomming, taalstrukture), Vraestel 2 letterkunde (70 marks: two setwork sections) and Vraestel 3 skryf (100 marks: opstel plus transactional texts), with the mondeling assessed at school. Home Language follows the same shape with heavier weighting on literature and longer writing.
Cambridge
Cambridge offers IGCSE Afrikaans as a Second Language (0548), assessed through Reading & Writing and Listening papers rather than a setwork-based literature exam — the 2025-2027 syllabus removed the optional speaking component. It suits learners who need practical Afrikaans communication rather than CAPS-style letterkunde.
IB
In the IB Diploma, Afrikaans can be taken as Language A: literature (including the school-supported self-taught route where no teacher is available) or as Afrikaans B in the language acquisition group, with availability generally tied to the November exam session used by SA schools. Assessment is essay- and oral-based rather than the SA three-paper format.
How to do well in Afrikaans
- Drill STOMPI (Subjek, Tyd, Objek, Manier, Plek, Infinitief) until word order is automatic — most sentence-rewrite marks in Paper 1 are lost to word order, not vocabulary.
- Master the ontkenning pattern: the second 'nie' goes at the end of the sentence ('Ek weet nie wat dit is nie'). Examiners test it every year because English speakers keep dropping it.
- Make one summary card per taalstrukture rule — direkte/indirekte rede, lydende vorm, trappe van vergelyking, intensiewe vorme — then work through five years of past papers; the same transformations repeat with different sentences.
- In the opsomming, stick strictly to the instructions: the required number of facts, your own words where asked, and the word limit with your word count written down. Copying whole sentences from the passage caps your mark.
- Answer begrip questions in Afrikaans, in full sentences, and never in English — an answer in the wrong language earns zero even if the understanding is perfect.
- For letterkunde, build a one-page profile per setwork: karakters, temas, and five key quotations with page references. Contextual questions reward specifics ('Noem TWEE redes...') over vague plot retelling.
- In Vraestel 3, choose the opstel topic you have vocabulary for, plan for five minutes, and respect the length (about 250-300 words for matric FAL). A shorter, accurate essay outscores a long one full of anglicisms.
- Learn the fixed formats of transactional texts — formele brief, e-pos, dagboekinskrywing, uitnodiging — because format marks are awarded before a word of content is read.

Frequently asked questions
Is Afrikaans compulsory for matric in South Africa?
Afrikaans itself is not compulsory, but every NSC candidate must take two official South African languages, one at Home Language level. At most English-medium schools the second language offered is Afrikaans FAL, so in practice many learners cannot drop it. You need at least 40% in your Home Language and at least 30% in the additional language to meet the pass requirements.
What is the difference between Afrikaans Home Language and First Additional Language?
Home Language (Huistaal) assumes near-native fluency and weights literature and sophisticated writing more heavily, while FAL (Eerste Addisionele Taal) is designed for learners acquiring Afrikaans as a second language. Both are examined in three papers plus an oral, but HL texts, setworks and marking standards are considerably more demanding. Learners genuinely bilingual in Afrikaans often take HL for the challenge; most English-home learners take FAL.
What does the matric Afrikaans FAL exam consist of?
Under CAPS there are three written papers: Vraestel 1, taal in konteks (80 marks — comprehension, summary and language structures), Vraestel 2, letterkunde (70 marks on prescribed setworks) and Vraestel 3, skryf (100 marks — an essay plus transactional texts). The mondeling (oral) is assessed at school during the year and counts toward the final mark, so it should not be neglected.
How can I improve my Afrikaans marks if I speak English at home?
Focus on the highest-yield areas first: the taalstrukture rules in Paper 1 are a fixed, learnable list, and writing formats in Paper 3 earn marks for structure before content. Then build passive exposure — Afrikaans news sites, series with Afrikaans audio, or ten minutes of reading a day — so begrip answers stop feeling like translation. A weekly one-on-one tutoring session that forces you to speak and write Afrikaans is the fastest fix for most learners.
How do I write a good Afrikaans opstel?
Pick the topic where you already have vocabulary, plan a beginning, middle and end before writing, and keep to the prescribed length (around 250-300 words for matric FAL). Markers reward correct word order, tenses and ontkenning far more than ambitious ideas expressed in broken Afrikaans, so write simply and accurately and keep a few practised idiome ready to lift your style.
What are taalstrukture and why do they matter so much?
Taalstrukture (language structures) is the grammar section of Paper 1 covering rules like STOMPI word order, the double negative, direct and indirect speech, active and passive voice and degrees of comparison. It is worth around half of Paper 1 and is the most predictable section of the whole subject, which makes it the quickest place to gain marks with targeted practice.
Does online Afrikaans tutoring actually work for FAL?
Yes — languages suit one-on-one online lessons particularly well because the learner has to speak, read aloud and get instant correction, which rarely happens in a class of 30. SyntroLearn's vetted tutors work from your school's setworks and past papers, and lessons can double as mondeling practice. Tell us your grade, curriculum and goals on the get-matched page and we will pair you with a suitable Afrikaans tutor.
