Business Studies is one of the most popular subject choices in the FET phase (Grades 10-12), and one of the most misunderstood. The CAPS curriculum organises everything around four main topics: business environments, business ventures, business roles and business operations. In the matric NSC exams these are split across two papers of 150 marks each — Paper 1 covers business environments and business operations, while Paper 2 covers business ventures and business roles. Each paper has a compulsory short-question section, a choice of longer direct and scenario questions, and one essay chosen from two. Business Studies across the curricula
IEB
IEB schools follow the same CAPS four-topic framework but write the IEB's own NSC papers, which lean harder on unseen case studies and application — rote-learned definitions alone will not score well. The IEB publishes its own Subject Assessment Guidelines and past papers.
DBE (CAPS)
The national CAPS curriculum splits matric Business Studies into Paper 1 (business environments and operations) and Paper 2 (business ventures and roles), each 150 marks in 2 hours. Essays follow the standard NSC marking grid of 32 content marks plus 8 insight marks.
Cambridge
Cambridge offers IGCSE Business Studies (0450) and AS & A Level Business (9609), which add more finance, accounting ratios and data-response analysis than CAPS. South African legislation is replaced by general business concepts, and evaluation-style answers carry heavy weight.
IB
The IB Diploma equivalent is Business Management (SL/HL), taught through key concepts such as change, ethics, sustainability and creativity, and assessed with structured papers plus an internal-assessment research project on a real organisation. It is more analytical and tool-driven than CAPS Business Studies.
How to do well in Business Studies
- Write the headings INTRODUCTION and CONCLUSION in your essay and support each with real content — the NSC marking guidelines forfeit the layout insight marks if the headings are missing or empty.
- Chase all 8 insight marks in the essay (layout, analysis, synthesis and originality, 2 each on top of 32 content marks): break the question into sub-headings, stick to relevant facts, and add a current, workable example for originality.
- Revise by paper, not just by topic: Paper 1 is business environments and business operations; Paper 2 is business ventures and business roles. Mixing them up wastes revision time and causes panic in the exam room.
- In case-study (scenario) questions, quote the business by name and lift specifics from the extract — application marks are only awarded when theory is explicitly linked to the scenario, not recited in the abstract.
- Learn the Acts (LRA, BCEA, EEA, SDA, COIDA, CPA, NCA, BBBEE) in a comparison table: purpose, impact on employers and employees, compliance actions and penalties — a legislation question appears in virtually every matric paper.
- Use the mark allocation as a fact counter: most explanation marks are awarded in 2s, so an 8-mark "discuss" question needs roughly four well-elaborated points, each in a full sentence.
- Match your answer to the action verb: "name" or "state" needs a short fact, while "discuss", "evaluate" and "justify" need elaborated points — and "evaluate" must end with a judgement or recommendation.
- Practise timing on real past papers: about 20 minutes for Section A, 30-35 minutes for each 40-mark Section B question and 30-35 minutes for the essay leaves a buffer for checking.
